Need a ‘disposable’ e-mail address?

stopwatchLike most of you, I HATE spam!  Due to my disdain for junk in my inbox, I’m very selective with regards to whom I share my e-mail address with.  If your address falls into the wrong hands, you’re pretty much doomed to a life of discarding Viagra ads and come-ons for pirated software.

Of course, however, for access to lots of online services, or to post to many blogs, you’ve got to register and supply an e-mail address. If you already get enough e-mail spam, you probably aren’t in the market to add to that total. That means that in many cases what you need is a “disposable” e-mail address.

I have, on (admittedly) more than one occasion, created a ‘junk mail’ address with a vendor such as GMail, to use as the e-mail I can freely provide to websites with confidence, knowing that I can always dump the address if my inbox becomes too junk-laden.  One organization took it one step further.

Enter: 10 minute Mail.

10 Minute Mail is a free service that lets you do just what it sounds like. Just go to their site, click on the “Get my 10 Minute Mail e-mail address” link, and you’ve got an e-mail address that will be valid for exactly ten minutes. That should be enough time for you to use to sign up for the service you’re joining, receive the confirming e-mail back to you, and to finally send the “yes, it’s really me” message back to the website– then the address just goes away. If you know you’re going to type slowly, you can add an additional ten minutes to the life of the e-mail account, but the point is this: once you’ve used it, you don’t have to worry about it any more, and you won’t add the to burden of your e-mail spam filter by receiving that much more “stuff” from your new best friend.

10 Privacy Settings Every Facebook User Should Know

The following is an excerpt from Nick O’Neil of allfacebook.com.  It’s definitely worth a read, whether you’re a Facebook newbie, or a seasoned pro looking to keep their nose clean.

Everyday I receive an email from somebody about how their account was hacked, how a friend tagged them in the photo and they want a way to avoid it, as well as a number of other complications related to their privacy on Facebook. Over the weekend one individual contacted me to let me know that he would be removing me as a friend from Facebook because he was “going to make a shift with my Facebook use – going to just mostly family stuff.” Perhaps he was tired of receiving my status updates or perhaps he didn’t want me to view photos from his personal life. Whatever the reason for ending our Facebook friendship, I figured that many people would benefit from a thorough overview on how to protect your privacy on Facebook.

Changes in the new year…

Greetings and Happy New Year!

As we usher in 2009, it is on a bittersweet note that I announce the closing of JeremyOnTheWeb.com and NetBrainz Hosting and Design. After nearly ten years of providing hosting and design solutions, I have decided to realign my focus to the love of freelance web design work that brought me into the hosting business in the first place.

It has been a marvelous journey. With the acquisition of OnTheWeb, Inc and Sitelutions in 2004, we quickly soared from a base of 25 customers in a small “hobby-business” to nearly 600 customers. What originally started as three storage servers in my Manchester, NH home quickly grew to a whopping fifty-five (!) servers on a Scottsdale, AZ server farm. This “do-it-yourselfer” quickly learned the value of a good bookkeeper and technical staff!

Still, there is something to be said for the small customer base. I have missed the personal attention and one-on-one talks with local business owners. My true passion is helping others build their dream on the web, and as such I have made this challenging decision.

To all of my loyal customers, I thank you for your patronage and notes of support. In turn, I wish you success and good fortune in your own business ventures.

May 2009 be prosperous for all!

Warm wishes,

Jeremy Morel
